Soil Amendments

Soil amendments are very important to the success of your plants. They do a tremendous job in bringing in more organic material and help to break up the tough clay in our Illinois soils. We have many different soil amendment options available depending on the project and plants that your installing.

 

Sphagnum Peat Moss

Sphagnum peat moss is the pure form of peat which is derived from certain types of bogs. It is extremely light and is great for increasing drainage, water retention, and breaking up compacted soil areas. This is a major component of many soil mixtures and is great for all garden beds.

 

Black Forest Soil Conditioner

Black Forest is our #1 recommended soil amendment. This soil conditioner is a must for difficult soil conditions. Excellent for breaking up clay soils. Soil acidifier lowers soil pH to establish the best growing conditions for plants in the alkaline soils of Illinois. Especially good for evergreens, maples, and birches. Can also be used as a top dressing or mulch. We recommend this for installation with all new tree and shrub plantings.

 

Mushroom Compost

Mushroom compost is extremely rich organic material that works great for amending infertile and compacted soils. Works magic for fruit and vegetable gardening by adding lots extra nutrients for optimal growth and production. For bed and garden preparation, spread compost and rototill thoroughly.

 

Blended Compost

Blended compost is a custom blend of rich organic mushroom compost material plus shredded bark fines. Helps to lower soil pH and break up compacted clay soils. Great for trees, shrubs, vegetable gardens, and general bed preparation. For bed preparation, spread compost and rototill thoroughly.

 

Vermiculite

Adds drainage and aids in developing better soil structure by loosening compacted soil. When combined with peat moss, it creates ideal growing conditions for roots. It also helps to regulate moisture in the soil by storing it when there is too much, and releasing it when the soil becomes dry. This is a major component of soilless mixtures.

 

Perlite

A volcanic rock that is great for adding water retention and aeration into a soil. It does an excellent job in loosening compacted soils. Perlite will absorb water and will release it when the soil becomes dry helping to regulate moisture.

 

Gypsum

All natural soil conditioner for lawns, gardens, trees, and shrubs. Loosens hard packed soils and breaks up clay while increasing water penetration and drainage.

 

Lime
